Actual Size is pleased to present new work by Los Angeles-based artist Katie Aliprando, curated by Amanda Hunt. 2 Figures 1 Schematic is a time-based visual exercise loosely conceived of as a “residency.” The exhibition is an excerpt of Aliprando’s practice, re-mapped according to this particular site. The artist spent a number of weeks in the space prior to the exhibition's opening, shifting parts and evolving story lines which may or may not be revealed to the viewer in its present form.

 

This project amplifies the tenets of Katie Aliprando’s practice, prospecting narrative and cinematic references, the incorporation of language essential to her methodology, and the various objects that often function as characters within her work. Each of these elements contributes to the creation of a fragmented vignette, or episode. 2 Figures 1 Schematic is a re-enactment and mental mapping of Aliprando’s encounter with the space. The exhibition also serves as a measure of how time affects artistic production; and how it is shaped by record, memory, and impression.

 

Katie Aliprando received her MFA from University of California, Los Angeles, and her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. She has exhibited in group shows at MOMA PS1, New York; 2nd Cannons; LAXART; Night Gallery, and Thomas Duncan, all in Los Angeles. Aliprando has a forthcoming publication produced by 2nd Cannons Publications, and has published with P&Co., a community broadsheet published biannually in Los Angeles.

 

Amanda Hunt, a graduate of the Curatorial Practice Program at California College of the Arts in San Francisco, is currently a curator at LAXART, Los Angeles. She has worked at galleries and institutions including Whitechapel Gallery, London; Friedrich Petzel Gallery, New York; the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Hunt was recently selected to curate the Portland2014 Biennial of Contemporary Art, presented by the Disjecta Contemporary Art Center, Portland.
