Actual Size Los Angeles is pleased to present Sermonette: Sign Off, an installation viewable through the gallery storefront windows of freestanding paintings, projection and sound by Rob Brown and Jorge Mujica. Through saturated colors, vibrant shapes, and shifting relationships between projection and painted sculpture, Sermonette: Sign Off pays homage to late night encounters with early television and explores the physiological and transcendental consequences of leading stimuli. Today's 24 hr programing cycle is a testament to free market capitalism's desire to completely dominate our external environment and internal headspace. Brown and Mujica conjure an era when the last segments of each television broadcast day concluded with a sermonette, Star-Spangled Banner salute, and color bars. Visual and auditory keys like stripes of color, a high pitch tone, and static snow trigger nostalgia for an age of less intrusive and pervasive entertainment. Shifts of light and sound also serve as metaphors for transcendental experience and relate to tonal systems used in meditation to calibrate the body and mind. The installation is divided into two acts that explore different physiological events. Act One: Sermonette/Meditation, focuses on the emotional transition which occurs between the termination of programing and a conclusion. Act Two: Sermonette/Shava, is derived from the yoga pose Shavasana, describing visually the state of mind when an ending arrives. 

 

 

Jorge Mujica (B.1982) Mexico City, Mexico and raised in Los Angeles, CA. Mujica's interest in art began when he traveled with his father, a photojournalist for the Spanish language newspaper “La Opinion”. From there, Mujica was able to mature a critical eye and formulate independent ideas about culture. This influenced him to seek an undergraduate degree in Political Science and Art History from California State University Bakersfield in 2008, A MA in Visual and Critical Studies from the School of the Arts Institute of Chicago in 2010, and a MFA in Painting from Yale University. After completing his final degree in 2012, Mujica relocated to Hollywood CA, where he began to work as an independent artist and curator.  In 2014 he established a studio in Long Beach, CA and in 2017 co-founded Creative Arts Coalition to Transform Urban Space (CACtTUS), a donation based project space for emerging contemporary artists in a live/work store front in Downtown Long Beach. He and his partner exhibit monthly installations by invited local, national, and international artists. He has shown at the Museum of Latin American Art (Long Beach, CA), Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum (San Bernardino), Steven Zevitas Gallery (Boston, MA), Yeah Maybe (Minneapolis, MN.), Basement Projects (Santa Ana, CA) @Studio_Mujica 

 

Rob Brown (b. 1981) is a visual and sound artist who lives in Santa Ana, California. His practice includes drawing, printmaking, painting and sound installation. His current work deals with systems, structure, logic and perception. He employs processed and synthesized sounds alongside prints and drawings. He received his AAA in Animation Art and Design from the Seattle Art Institute in 2002, his BFA in painting and drawing from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2008 and his MFA in studio art from California State University, Long Beach in 2013. He has exhibited his work nationally and abroad. He is a founding member of the Mutual Aid collective and studio space in the historic Santora building in downtown Santa Ana, CA.@rawblades
