Actual Size Los Angeles is pleased to announce Soup Kitchen, a performance by Gustavo Herrera and Spencer Douglass held in conjunction with the closing of their exhibition, Hollenbeck. Join us on Sunday, November 27th, from 3-5pm. The performance will start at 4pm. Rye whiskey and hot soup will be served.

 

Hollenbeck is a video installation that features a single-channel projection and a shrine of found artifacts. The video employs live action and stop-motion collage to explore the decomposition of urban, rural, and psychic environments. Loosely based on John Edward Hollenbeck, a wealthy industrialist who played a key role in the development of Los Angeles during the 1880's, Hollenbeck merges the stark reality of the barren landscape with fantastical interpretations of the past. The narrative follows the character as he navigates between life and death, using both symbolic and tangible currency.

 

Spencer Douglass (b. 1978 Modesto, CA) lives and works in Los Angeles and holds an MFA from Claremont Graduate University and a BS in film from Northwestern University. He is an artist and curator who practices in installation and video. Selected exhibitions include Kavi Gupta, Berlin; Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara; Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena; Salt Lake Art Center, Salt Lake City; Happy Lion, Los Angeles.

 

Gustavo Herrera (b. 1975 Los Angeles, CA) lives and works in Los Angeles and holds an MFA from Claremont Graduate University and a BA from Cal State Long Beach. He works in mixed media installations, sculpture, video, painting, drawing, collage and performance. Selected exhibitions include Black Dragon Society, Los Angeles; Human Resources, Los Angeles, Miami Basel Art Positions, Miami; San Francisco Museum of Art, San Francisco; Mexicali Biennial, La Casa de Tia Tina, Mexicali, Mexico; Kavi Gupta, Berlin; Peres Projects, Berlin; NADA, Miami; and Millikin Gallery, Stockholm.
