Actual Size is pleased to present The Edge That Holds, a two person exhibition of sculpture and drawing by Christina Tsui and sculptural text by Jason Gowans. Gowans and Tsui investigate the way politics parses reality and how images and language break apart when they attempt to articulate this phenomenon. The Edge That Holds implies a point has been reached where a conclusion can be pointed to. Structurally, the title sets the viewer up for an explanation, however, in the end, nothing didactic is provided. Instead of offering a clear position of opposition, Gowans and Tsui choose to highlight the complexities of representing emotionally and historically complicated subjects.

This is the first of three consecutive exhibitions by the graduating artists in the MFA program at UC Irvine. Each week will feature two artists in conversation.

Jason Gowans (b. Kelowna, Canada) focuses on the photographic image’s evolution throughout history and technology. He investigates how images continue to shape and define our interactions with the world, both consciously and subconsciously. Gowans holds an MFA from The University of California, Irvine and a BFA from Concordia University in Montréal Canada.

Christina Tsui (b. San Gabriel, CA) works through intimate forms and images that hold a space for collective trauma and loss, a space that is not locatable but can be traced as a continuous folding and unfolding return. Tsui received a BA from the University of California, San Diego and holds an MFA from the University of California, Irvine.
