CHINATOWN LOS ANGELES- Actual Size Los Angeles is pleased to announce the opening of its inaugural show, "This is the Beginning". Works by Eamon Ore-Giron and Bobbi Woods, with a performance by Butchy Fuego. On exhibit from April 24, 2010 - May 8, 2010.
“This is the beginning …”
These are the opening lines of the Popol Vuh, the creation story of the Maya. In the Popol Vuh, the process of creation is depicted as a balance between the generation and destruction of different models of man. Destruction is an integral part of reforming the body of man to make a sufficient being that improves upon what came before.
Both Bobbi Woods and Eamon Ore-Giron work with pre-existing text and imagery. They examine the manner in which media is packaged and represented. In dealing with this collective mythology (whether it be movie posters, sections of ancient text, or record sleeve covers) these artists re-see, appropriate, pay homage, and translate these works into something that is theirs, something that conveys a distinct meaning and sensibility that was latent or absent in the original work.
For the opening event, a performance by Butchy Fuego will charge and disrupt the viewing experience with loud ritualized drumming.
